MORE TO PATTERNS THAN MEET THE EYE. Many of the techniques and combinations in the classic Taekwondo patterns are found in the Japanese and Okinawan Karate systems. These techniques have quite different applications to many of the modern applications taught. For instance the chamber positions themselves are often the block and the technique itself the counter. Many hand positions can be used as joint locks or throws. Learning patterns is not just about learning the moves but also the applications for each move of which there are many. There are over a dozen different applications for low block alone including pressure point attacks,chokes and takedowns. And this is the most basic block taught at white belt but is still seen in many high grade patterns. There is a growing trend in Taekwondo to find these often hidden more realistic applications to the patterns, making patterns training much more than just learning the moves to get through your next grading. ...more
